What is the role of Accord Server?

I keep seeing references to Accord Server throughout the documentation but I'm not entirely clear on what it actually does day to day. Can someone explain what its role is?

Accord Server is a configurable service that manages data for all Accord HMI clients and other modules. It handles PLC communications, data logging, historical reporting, security, recipe loading, redundancy, and MES functions. It acts as the central hub of the Accord Platform.
